Taekwondo
Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art known as “The Art of Kicking and Punching”. Taekwondo is both a powerful self-defense system and a modern Olympic sport. The art is characterized by its dramatic kicks; practitioners also utilize rapid hand strikes to disable opponents. Taekwondo is widely recognized as the most popular martial art in the United States.
Taekwondo practitioners come from all age groups and levels of ability, learning over time to hone their skills and improve their balance and form. Master Shea’s philosophy is one of individual achievement instead of any “idealized” performance standards or requirements. At any time, you are striving to reach your personal best and are not measured against anyone else in the class. This philosophy creates a mutually supportive environment of students where each and every class is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for all!
A very important decision!
With the wide variety (and variable quality) of Martial Arts instruction available today, it is more important than ever to make a careful evaluation of your options before you make your commitment to train anywhere. Don’t forget that you are investing both time & money in an activity that should give you significant returns. If your return appears questionable, it’s better to move on.
Key Questions to Consider
The Instructor(s)
Is he or she a true accomplished practitioner or Master? This means not only rank or belt, but also the legitimacy of the governing body that awarded their rank. Ideally, the school should belong to or be affiliated with the US A Tae Kwon Do (USAT) or the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF). This ensures that time and effort you put into ultimately earning your Black Belt will not be lost as your Black Belt will be honored by reputable Tae Kwon Do schools both nationally and internationally. Beware of instructors who have created their own “style” as your belt rank will only be good with their specific school, and you might have to start all over again if you join another school in the future.
Palisades Tae Kwon Do Academy is a traditional Martial Arts school. Master Shea personally teaches the classes; opening class, setting the day’s exercise training goals, demonstrating techniques, and ensuring all students receive an adequate level of one-on-one instruction. In addition to Master Shea himself, there are a select number of high-level students who assist in the day-to-day class training. We highly recommend any prospective student to come in and observe or participate in a class to get an idea of the quality of our programs.
